SLC7A11 is a multipass membrane protein of the SLC7 amino acid transporter family and is the transport component of the system xc− cystine/glutamate antiporter. SLC7A11 forms a disulfide-linked heterodimer with SLC3A2, a type II single-pass membrane glycoprotein that functions as a chaperone and supports the trafficking, stabilization, and cell-surface expression of SLC7A11. The SLC7A11–SLC3A2 complex mediates sodium-independent exchange of extracellular cystine and intracellular glutamate across the plasma membrane. SLC7A11 provides the substrate transport activity of the complex, whereas SLC3A2 primarily serves as an accessory chaperone required for proper membrane localization of the transporter.
