Solute carrier family 2 facilitated glucose transporter member 1 is a member of the major facilitator superfamily encoded by the SLC2A1 gene and commonly known as GLUT1. It is a multipass transmembrane protein with 12 predicted transmembrane helices that mediates facilitative transport of glucose and several related hexoses across the plasma membrane. SLC2A1 is widely expressed, with prominent abundance in erythrocytes, endothelial barriers, and many metabolically active tissues where it supports basal glucose uptake. Transport activity is driven by concentration gradients rather than direct ATP hydrolysis.
