Galanin is a secreted neuropeptide produced by proteolytic processing of the preprogalanin precursor. The precursor contains an N-terminal signal peptide and gives rise to mature galanin together with a galanin-message-associated peptide. Galanin acts through galanin receptors, which belong to the G protein-coupled receptor family, and participates in neuroendocrine and neuronal signaling.
