CD81 is a member of the tetraspanin family encoded by the CD81 gene. It is a cell surface protein with four transmembrane helices, two extracellular loops, and short cytoplasmic N- and C-terminal regions that organize membrane microdomains through interactions with partner proteins. CD81 is broadly expressed in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic tissues, where it participates in cell adhesion, signal transduction, membrane trafficking, and regulation of immune cell activation. It is also a known component of the B-cell coreceptor complex with CD19 and CD21.
