CD71 is a type II transmembrane glycoprotein and a member of the transferrin receptor family. It forms a homodimer linked by disulfide bonds and is responsible for the receptor-mediated endocytosis of iron-loaded transferrin, facilitating cellular iron uptake. CD71 is highly expressed in proliferating cells due to their increased iron requirements and plays a critical role in iron homeostasis and cellular growth. It contains a cytoplasmic internalization motif, a single transmembrane domain, and a large extracellular domain that binds transferrin.
