C-C motif chemokine receptor 5 is a member of the class A rhodopsin-like G protein-coupled receptor family encoded by the CCR5 gene. It is a seven-transmembrane cell surface receptor that binds chemokines including CCL3, CCL4, and CCL5, primarily signaling through Gi proteins to regulate calcium mobilization, integrin activation, and directed cell migration. CCR5 is expressed mainly on T lymphocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, and other leukocyte subsets, where it contributes to immune cell trafficking and inflammatory responses. The receptor is also recognized as a coreceptor for entry of certain strains of human immunodeficiency virus type 1.
