Alpha-2A adrenergic receptor is a member of the rhodopsin-like class A G protein-coupled receptor family and responds to the catecholamines epinephrine and norepinephrine. The human receptor is a 450-amino-acid integral membrane protein containing seven transmembrane helices, an extracellular amino terminus, and an intracellular carboxyl terminus. ADRA2A primarily couples to inhibitory G proteins of the Gi/Go family, reducing adenylyl cyclase activity and intracellular cyclic AMP levels. Its experimentally supported functions include regulation of neurotransmitter release and modulation of physiological responses mediated by adrenergic signaling.
