Claudin 19 is a member of the claudin family of tetraspan integral membrane proteins that are core structural components of tight junction strands. The protein contains four transmembrane helices with cytoplasmic N- and C-termini and two extracellular loops that contribute to paracellular barrier properties and ion selectivity. CLDN19 localizes to tight junctions in epithelial cells and is expressed in kidney and ocular tissues. Expression data support enrichment in kidney and eye, consistent with its role in epithelial barrier function.
